Saw palmetto (Sabal serrulata) looks like a small palm tree and has been used for centuries to balance the prostate gland and reduce swelling. It has become a vital ingredient in dealing with something that affects 90% of all men who reach their eighties.

It is called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and affects 8% of men under 60 years old and 50% of men over 60. The prostate gland is vitally important in secreting the required substances to produce hormones like testosterone. This process needs very high concentrations of many androgen hormones found in the prostatic tissue.

BPH is related to long-term exposure to the strong androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the prostate. The enzyme DHT is required to convert testosterone, which is called 5-alpha-reductase.

Clinical studies done on Saw palmetto show that it is an effective 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It has shown to improve prostrate health by having an anti-inflammatory effect on this vitally important organ and preventing prostate cancer in men.

More aging men are turning to hormone restoration to help fight the signs of aging by keeping the important hormones produced by the prostrate in balance. Recent studies show that for optimal health the important hormones like pregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and cortisol, progesterone, estrogen, testosterone and DHT should all be in balance.

It is all a very delicate balance and men have realized that gentle testosterone therapy will help to regain their youthful vigor. The problem is that testosterone can turn into harmful DHT as well as estradiol though aromatization. Both of these result in a swollen prostrate affecting T production.

The symptoms of a swollen prostrate include hair loss, gynecomastia and weight gain as well as affecting any and all sexual function. But saw palmetto has been used effectively for more than 200 years to prevent these problems and to improve the symptoms associated with BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy in men).

Using saw palmetto on a regular basis will help to modulate the system of complex hormone metabolism in both men and women. You should be warned that taking too much saw palmetto can lead to a loss of libido and the experts agree that 160 mg of saw palmetto should be taken by women and 160-320 mg for men.
